A Question to Ponder

“‘I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.'” The priest was raising his hands as he said the first commandment. He was actually doing many gestures; a reason why I was able to pay attention to his homily. “That is the first commandment. But what does the word ‘gods’ mean there? Does it only point out to a god of another religion? No! There are other people who worship other ‘gods’ than whoever they worship in their own religion. Some worship drugs, others adore their cars. But the most evident is none other than?”

Money. I told myself.

“Money!” He exclaimed. “Many of us adore money, am I right? Money is the ‘god’ of some of you, am I correct?”

Some stayed quiet, and some disagreed. When the priest saw that some of us disagreed, he said, “Really? We celebrate eight masses in a day. What if instead of the host during the Holy Communion, I would give ten thousand pesos to each one of you. How many times would you attend mass?”

How many times would you attend mass?

How many times would you attend mass?

How many times would you attend mass?

The words echoed in my head. And yes, I knew my answer was just as selfish as others. Afterwards I had this deep conversation with myself–a conversation that changed my future plans, and so was my perception in life. Maybe, someone was interpreting happiness the wrong way, and I was glad I had him to convert me back.

I smiled and whispered, “You are so cool, Father.”

What if instead of the host during the Holy Communion, the priest would give ten thousand pesos…

How many times would YOU attend mass?

What are your thoughts?
